>Creating Abstract Vortexes



This tutorial is a step-by-step explanation of how I created my vortex abstracts. You can check them out Here. Please send me your feedback at hinchu@hinchu.com

Set up the Scene

  • Delete the ground plane.
  • In the sky presets choose "Simple Black Background"
  • Double click the trackball and change the Camera's position and rotation sittings all to 0.
  • Go to top view
  • Create a sphere
  • Open the object attributes and change the sphere's position to 0,0,0.
  • Duplicate the sphere.
  • Hit the * on the number pad of your keyboard to double the size of Sphere 2.
  • Move Sphere 2 two spaces forward with the arrow keys.
  • Duplicate the sphere.
  • Hit the * on the number pad of your keyboard to double the size of Sphere 3.
  • Move Sphere 3 four spaces forward with the arrow keys.

    Create the Material

  • Select all of the spheres and enter the Material Lab.
  • Click the button to create the default material.
  • Add a texture to the Diffusion and Transparency and Bump by moving the Marble into the first column.
  • Change the Ambience to 0.
  • Change the Transparency to 45.
  • Change the Bump Height to 30.
  • Change the texture to abalone (In the psychedelic folder.)
  • Enter the DTE and click the the B button on the left most box to turn on the Bump Height.
  • Back in the Material Lab set abalone's Mapping Mode to Spherical.
  • Now add a different texture to the Diffuse (Drag click on the second column right next to Diffuse.)
  • Change the texture to psy craters (In the psychedelic folder).
  • Change the mapping mode on psy craters to Spherical

    And Finally

  • Enter back into the scene
  • Rotate all of the spheres 90 degrees on the X axis.
  • Render your scene.
  • If you want to tweak the colors do so in the DTE or just change the Hue in post production.
